Do I need a 8 or 10 mm zipper? Do I need a spiral or profile zipper?
There is a big difference between which type of zipper is used for which purpose. For example, one is used for outdoor cushions, while the other is strong enough to fasten boat covers. But which zipper is for which situation, and moreover, which one do you need? We at ESVO will guide you through the entire selection process and also offer you the best solution.
Sizes of zippers
- The 5mm zipper is the narrowest zipper we sell and is mostly used as an application in outdoor cushions, inner tents and cover flaps. Also, these widths are most commonly found in clothing, bags or The closure is mostly applied where the zipper is not going to be too heavily loaded.
- The 8 mm zipper is the second-largest zipper we sell and is also used in ventilation or window flaps, smaller tents, but also jackets, bags, trousers, cushions... we could go on and on. The 8mm zipper offers just that little bit more strength, while not being obviously present.
- The 10mm zipper is the largest and also the strongest zipper we sell. This zipper is used in heavy-duty applications such as tent doors, boat covers, awnings but also in garments such as winter coats, parkas, overalls and sportswear. They can also be found in various products such as suitcases, backpacks, sleeping bags, trampoline nets. The larger width of the zipper means it can handle more force and load, making them ideal for projects that require a strong and durable closure.
A common mistake when measuring the width of the zipper is to include the zipper tie in the process. The width of the zipper refers to the width of the zipper itself when closed, not the entire zipper tape. The width of the zipper tie determines both its strength and function. ESVO's zipper tape is also water-repellent treated, which gives it an edge over any other zipper on the market.
At ESVO, we sell these widths exclusively in the form of a spiral zipper woven into a polyester zipper tape. All zipper sizes can be found with us in a range of colours. There are also different types of zippers, such as X-shape, O-shape, divisible, double divisible and non-divisible. for more information on these, click here.
Block teeth or spiral?
We also have a block teeth zipper, it is 8.6mm in width, and is made of plastic, although the slider is sold in both metal and plastic versions. The block teeth zipper has a clearly visible teeth structure that offers a more industrial look. They are therefore sturdier than a spiral zipper.
The block-teeth zipper is used in heavy fabrics, such as denim and leather, but is also incorporated in jeans, parkas, bags, backpacks and suitcases, where both durability and sturdiness are completely central. In tents, block-teeth zippers are often used for zipperping on awnings, as they are very easy to zipper on. On top of that, the plastic block zipper is many times more resistant to salt water and tarnish, making it an ideal solution for everything outdoors.
Zipper sliders
We also sell various zipper sliders at ESVO ; think one grip plate, two grip plates, a metal slider or plastic slider with autolock. The differences, although simple, offer a world of difference. For example, a slider with two handle plates is used to open a tent door from both sides while a slider with one handle plate is perfect for a bag. Also, the plastic zipper sliders with two grip plates (which can only be applied to a block zipper) equipped with an autolock function, offer extra security when opening and closing.
Common misunderstandings about zippers
People often think that the entire zipper tie needs to be replaced when the zipper no longer closes properly. 8 times out of 10, however, this problem is caused by wear and tear on the slider: the middle part of the slider wears out through use, which causes the hooks in the zipper to no longer connect properly. As a result, the entire zipper seems in need of replacement. So replacing the slider often fixes the problem in its entirety.
